Apostelkirche Gütersloh

Church
The history of Gütersloh's oldest church can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The first stone church dates back to around 1201, of which a few remnants are still preserved in the tower of today's Apostelkirche. A fire destroyed this building at the beginning of the 16th century.

The newly built Apostle Church, which was Catholic until the Reformation, served Protestants and Catholics alike as a place of worship until 1890. The period of the so-called "Simultaneum" ended with the consecration of the Catholic St. Pancratius Church.
The old Apostle Church was then destroyed again during a bombing raid in 1944. Numerous people who had sought shelter in the tower lost their lives. The foundation stone for the current building was laid in 1951 according to plans by architect Werner March, who had become famous for his design of the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
