But how did it all start? During the Second World War, trained radio technician Charles Holland suffered a blast trauma in a plane crash over Italy. The resulting hearing impairment forced the Englishman to stay in hospital for a long time. From his hospital bed, he began to look for technical solutions for a hearing aid. This is also where he met his wife Anna-Maria. In 1950, he and his wife founded Amplifon in Milan. The first branch was a converted bus with a mobile sales service for Amplifon hearing aids. In the 1960s, Amplifon became the market leader in Italy. The Research Center for Audiology and Otology, established in 1971, lays the foundation for further success. In 1992, the first store opens in Spain, followed by Switzerland, the USA and the Netherlands. After a successful IPO in 2001, branches in Egypt, Hungary, the UK, Amplifon Deutschland GmbH and subsidiaries in many other countries were added.
