Alte Synagoge

Historic site
The building, originally used as a barn, was acquired by the Jewish community of Detmold in 1742.
After the acquisition, the building was restored and converted into a half-timbered synagogue. Further renovations followed in 1840 and 1845.

After the growing Jewish community decided to build a larger place of worship, the synagogue and the adjoining so-called Vorsängerhaus were sold to an innkeeper in 1905. The innkeeper Wilhelm Schmidt used the premises as a locksmith's workshop and warehouse.

In 1982, the building was acquired by the Bielefeld Christian Community and converted for the Detmold congregation. Since 1984, the building has been used by the Christian Community as a community center and meeting place, as well as for lectures and concerts.
