The Wiehengebirge is often referred to as Germany's northernmost low mountain range. Locals jokingly claim that it gets its name from the fact that it looks like a mountain range (Wie'n Gebirge) from a distance. Hiking here is excellent, as the Wittekindsweg runs along the ridge - from Osnabrück to Porta Westfalica. If you want to discover it, there is a beautiful access route directly from the center of Bad Oeynhausen. Simply lace up your hiking boots and off you go - first through the Sielpark and then past streams, across fields and meadows through the northern districts of Bad Oeynhausen. Along the way, you pass Ovelgönne Castle, a moated castle built in the 17th century, in the district of Eidinghausen. The route continues northwards, always with the Wiehengebirge, or more precisely the Eidinghausener Berg, in view. The terrain gradually rises, you walk past the Krause Buche natural monument and now hike up to the ridge path.
