With its turquoise-blue, crystal-clear water, the canyon is a real jewel of the region. Many rare animal and plant species, such as eagle owls, lizards and wild orchids, now find ideal living conditions in the lime mining area, which was closed in 1977. Three viewpoints in the nature reserve around the canyon offer a fantastic view of the so-called Blue Lagoon.
The route continues across the wide meadows to the ALVA Sculpture Park, which allows you to encounter exciting works of art in the midst of an enchanting landscape.
Unfortunately, depending on the wind direction, there may be noise pollution from the Autobahn 1 on this tour.

Access route
From the "Old Town Hall" at Lengerich town church, go straight ahead onto Bergstraße, turn right onto Wilkiensweg, continue uphill, cross the L 589 and continue straight ahead uphill. At the top left to the "Max und Moritz" hiking hut, a few meters further on (at the signpost) is the start of the circular hiking trail.
Starting point and parking space: Cemetery chapel at the LWL-Klinik Lengerich, parking lot at the cemetery chapel. Due to the limited number of parking spaces, you can also use the free parking lot behind the fire station on Schulstraße. From here, take Bergstraße and follow the access signs. Alternatively, we recommend that you start in Leeden.
Start at the Am Kleeberg cemetery chapel. After just a few meters, the trail climbs steeply.
At the top, turn right onto the Hermannsweg trail.
After leaving the forest, continue straight ahead to the Max und Moritz hikers' hut with a wonderful view over Lengerich. A few meters back, then right at the signpost. Across the meadows, first past hedges, then along the fence, the Tecklenburg radio tower can be seen on the slope on the left.
Through the forest and along the edge of the forest to the rest area at the four brewing ponds. Cross the Leedener Mühlenbach stream, turn right along the slope through the forest,
past farms and down into a hollow with two small ponds. Alpacas greet you from the pasture and soon the church tower appears on the horizon. You have already reached Leeden. A few meters along the edge of the village, then up to the forest with a rest bench and a beautiful view of the village.
Continue uphill to the viewpoint at the former summer house. On a clear day, you can see the towers of Osnabrück Cathedral. Downhill in the forest to the Hermannsbrücke bridge.
Through forest and meadows in a domino pattern to the Stapenhorst estate. Around the estate, then onto the ridge. You soon reach the nature reserve around the Lengerich canyon with its turquoise lake. Across the wide meadow, through the ALVA sculpture park to a viewing platform. Now back to the Am Kleeberg chapel
