At 168 m, the Schweicheln "mountain" is not particularly high and is a popular hiking area with panoramic views of the vast landscape.

People were already using the elevation for their settlements in the forest over 6000 years ago. They hoped that this would give them better protection from enemies. In old local history books, you can find descriptions of "unholy spirits" or even "defensive wolves" that allegedly lay in wait for poor hikers. It is possible that the relatively large area of forest deterred people from crossing it, especially at night.

During the Second World War, an anti-aircraft position built in the mountain was the target of many air raids. Bomb craters are still visible in the forest today. Today, the large forest complex (in the still sparsely wooded district of Herford) with its partly wide paths is ideal for relaxed hiking
