The hiking trail leads partly along a ridge slightly below the actual Saalegge.
Place names can help us to better understand the history of the landscape. "Saal" is associated with the Old High German "salha" for willow or pasture. "Egge" comes from Ecke, Old High German "ecka" and means a mountain ridge. The name "Voßgrund" stands for Fuchsgrund and refers to a hollow where foxes can be found. "Bretthorst" refers to the job title of the Brettschneider, "Horst" is an old term for woodland.
The names illustrate the predominant forest use of the last centuries at the Saalegge with a depression that was used as grassland and later also for agriculture.
