Hiking experience between two mountains

One part of the hiking trail leads along the south-western foothills of the Obernberg on forest and woodland paths. We walk along historic country weirs and enjoy views of fields, meadows and into the distance.

The leisurely 9 km circular tour starts at the Obernberg hiking parking lot in the direction of Herford. Along the way, you will come across historic country weirs. They were used to mark a town boundary and as protection against unwanted guests.

Unforgettable views at Restaurant Steinmeyer

After crossing the Ellersiekerbach, we turn right towards Stuckenberg. On the hiking trail, we pass the Restaurant Steinmeyer on Wüstener Weg. The outdoor terrace invites you to take a break and enjoy some refreshments.

After the break, we take a left turn past the Stuckenberg and soon see the Bismarck Tower in front of us.

The Herford Bismarck Tower was inaugurated in 1906 after a planning and construction phase of around two years. From the viewing platform at a height of around 23 m, we can enjoy fantastic views in all directions.

Historical boundary stones between Lippe and Herford

After around 900 m, we reach the Hotel and Restaurant Waldesrand. We walk slightly downhill towards the highway and can easily cross it via a foot and cycle bridge. Now we are back in the Salzufler Stadtforst. This is also criss-crossed by border stones along the former border between the Lippe region and the county of Ravensberg and Prussia.

Animals feel at home in the Salzufler Stadtforst

Near the Schwaghof site, we enter a remarkable area that is worth protecting. The forest area is home to numerous rare bat species, great spotted and black woodpeckers and stock doves.

The hiking trail leads us along the Schwaghof ponds back to the hiking parking lot at Obernberg. The Schwaghofteiche area is being renaturalized. In the past, these ponds were used for water supply and later as fire-fighting ponds.
For relaxation after the hike, a visit to the VitaSol thermal baths or the varied cuisine in Bad Salzuflen.
