The Hücker Moor depression was formed 100,000 years ago by an ice-age sinkhole.
Salt was dissolved inside the earth and a cavity formed. As a result, the resulting hole, which was around 60 m deep, filled with rubble and soil. A fen formed above it. The extraction of the peat in the middle of the 19th century created the Hücker-Moor lake. The "fingers" visible on the map, which form its shoreline, indicate the former plots of land of the various owners. Today, the lake is a very popular local recreation destination and the only opportunity in the district of Herford for rowing boats for everyone.
