The extensive forests of the Egge are home to the black woodpecker, our largest native woodpecker species. It is particularly fond of the beech forests on the eastern slopes of the Egge.
Follow the call of the black woodpecker and immerse yourself in the woodlands of the Egge. On your hike through the "forests between Iburg and Aschenhütte", you will repeatedly come across stands of tall beech trees, which, as so-called hall forests, bear a certain resemblance to the interiors of Gothic churches, which are also dominated by mighty columns. They are the preferred habitat and breeding ground of the black carpenter. Due to its
body size, it can only build its burrows in trees of a corresponding size. As it also only builds them in trees with smooth bark and at heights of 8 meters upwards to protect itself from nest predators, it is clear why this bird is the characteristic species of the beech woodland.
Dive into the forest interior and pay the black woodpecker a visit. Among the native woodpeckers, it is the most perfect carpenter, as it is the only one able to build a breeding cavity in healthy beech trees. And as it always uses several cavities and likes to move from time to time, it creates space for new tenants such as stock doves or bats.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
The beech forests in the "Wälder zwischen Iburg und Aschenhütte" nature reserve are not just an invitation to hike in summer. They already show their best side in spring. From mid-April to mid-May, numerous herbaceous plants unfurl their flowers. The forest floor then resembles a colorful patchwork quilt. The purple of the larkspur, the blue of the violets and the yellow of the primroses compete with the white of the wild garlic and the wood anemone.
Depending on the time of year, a climb up the Kaiser-Karls-Turm tower at the Sachsenklause restaurant or a visit to the ruins of Iburg castle or monastery will round off your hike.
