  • Destination: Heinemannstraße/corner of Brockhagener Straße
Attention: Due to construction work, a detour via the Lutter must be taken from 21.10. - 31.10.2024. The alternative route takes you across the Lutter at Niemöllershof, by the pond. This city walk in the green heart of the Quelle district of Bielefeld takes you 4.8 km through the Luttertal valley without any major differences in altitude.

The Ems-Lutter, with its typically sandy stream bed, flows through varied sections of landscape with equally diverse flora and fauna on its way through the south of Bielefeld. The Ems-Lutter hiking trail begins in the upper Lutter valley and passes between several ponds. This area used to be heavily used for industrial purposes, but after numerous renaturation measures, ecologically valuable standing and flowing waters and a marshy alder beech forest have been created here again.

Further on, the Luttertal widens and the trail leads past meadows and wooded dunes, which originally date back to the first ice age. In an arc, you reach Niemöller's mill and the mill pond in front of it, from where the last section runs close to the stream to Heinemannstraße.

Directions

From the parking lot on Osnabrücker Straße, follow the paved road in a westerly direction until you reach the parking lot of the natural swimming pool. Turn left here into the green corridor, with a playground and the Brackwede natural pool on your right. Follow the course of the Ems-Lutter until you reach a small bridge, after which you will come to "Ferdinandstraße". Keep right here and turn right again into the green corridor. You will still see the Naturbad Brackwede on your right. Follow the path until you reach a wooden bridge, after which you turn left. From here, follow the course of the Ems-Lutter and continue straight ahead in the green corridor. You will see the first pond on your right; follow the main path here, which takes you between the ponds to the next bridge.

After the bridge, turn right so that the last of the ponds is on your left. After about 250m, the path forks for the first time, keep right and follow the path until you come to another, larger fork, where you also keep right. You will now come to the road "An der Lutter". Follow this road to the left until you cross under the railroad tracks. After the underpass, turn right and then immediately left approx. 25 m further on, so that the "Waldstadion Quelle" sports ground is on your right. After passing the sports facilities of the Quelle comprehensive school, you will come to a crossroads where you turn left. After just a few meters, turn right into the wooded area in front of the gate to the Möller factory premises. Following the path, you leave the wooded area and cross a meadow until you come to Heinemannstraße, which you turn right onto, follow for approx. 140 m and then take the first left turn back into the green corridor.

Follow the path along the wooded sand dunes from the last ice age. You will cross a crossroads where the open sandy ground once again clearly shows these dunes. Following the path through the Luttertal valley, you come to the "Niemöllershof" road. Cross this road and follow a narrow path until you reach a meadow on your right with a clear view of the television tower.

At the second possibility, keep left and then follow the path, which circles the Niemöller farmstead in a wide left-hand bend and meets the "Niemöllershof" road again.

Tip: It is worth leaving the official route briefly here and taking a closer look at Niemöllers Mühle, which is a listed building. On the grounds of the mill, a path between the mill building and the bakery leads down to the course of the Lutter. From here, there is a good view of the mill wheel.

The official route turns right off the road after just 50 m and runs between the Ems-Lutter and the mill pond. The following section of the hiking trail runs close to the stream and is narrow in places and/or heavily overgrown with roots. The path now leads you back up the Luttertal valley, against the direction of flow of the Ems-Lutter.

After you have passed the buildings in front of you on the right, you come to a path junction, where you turn right. A few meters further on, the path forks and you keep left until you come to "Heinemannstraße" again, which you follow on the right until you reach your destination.

Tip: If you would like to hike the trail as a circular tour, choose the following route at the above-mentioned crossroads:

After you have passed the buildings on your right, you will come to a crossroads where you turn left again towards Naturbad-Brackwede. Follow the Ems-Lutter markings back to Naturbad Brackwede. From this point, walk back to the starting point.

Please note that the route is naturally longer as a result.
