The Doberg is a special feature not only for the district of Herford, but for the whole world.

This is due to its geology. All the layers of the primeval North Sea in the Oligocene period more than 30 million years ago can be found in the old marl pit near Bünde. Its unique structure still provides a habitat for many rare plants and animals today.
Fossils of sea creatures were found during the extraction of the calcareous marl, including spectacular ones such as those of toothed whales and manatees! A selection is on display in the Doberg Museum in Bünde. The Bünde marl was used by farmers as a fertilizer until the introduction of artificial fertilizers around 1930 and was in great demand.
