To the west of the town of Bünde, the Else floodplain opens up wide.

The river and its tributaries are accompanied by extensive meadows and pastures. The Else lowlands used to be prone to flooding, which also threatened the town of Bünde.

Mankind fought against the floods with numerous interventions, such as straightening, dyke construction and water detour. The Else was even divided into two watercourses, the new and the old Else.

Today, attempts are being made to give the river more space again - a measure that is good for flood protection and good for nature.
