The Asbeke and Kinzbeke streams together form a typical, widely branched network of watercourses in the Ravensberg Hills - with two main streams and many tributaries.
Large stretches of the valley floor have been converted into "Sieken". For many generations, more land was gained for grazing and mowing. Since 1996, 123 ha (1 ha = 10,000 m²) of the streams and their adjacent areas have been designated as a nature reserve (NSG). A dead female otter was found in 2022 before the Asbeke flows into the Kinzbeke in the district of Eickum. This roadkill is both bad and exciting news: after many years of complete extinction, this very rare species is back in our waters, as many other traces prove - and not just on the Asbeke and Kinzbeke.
