The term "soratfeld" comes from the Middle High German word "sor" = "barren" "dry" or "poor". The agricultural use of the Soratfeld mainly consists of growing grain. However, the barren plateau has now become fertile land for energy production. One of the largest inland wind farms in Europe characterizes the landscape north of Lichtenau. Around the Soratfeld, in contrast to the barren plateau, there is a charming valley landscape with a diverse flora and fauna.
