Directions

This circular route has the special feature that although it is called "Preußisch Oldendorf A5", it runs entirely through Lower Saxony. This is because it is maintained by the Preußisch Oldendorf Hiking Friends. It starts at the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony: at the "Schwarzer Brink" hiking parking lot. After the tour, it is worth making a detour of a few minutes from the parking lot to the Wiehenturm observation tower. To do this, head east from the parking lot or follow the "A8" and "A9" markings.

To reach the A5 circular route, cross the K79 ("Bergstraße") from the parking lot and follow the Wittekindsweg northern variant (white-red) on a wide forest path. The A5 and the northern variant follow the same route for the first 3.2 kilometers. Later, the Bad Essener Rundweg (yellow circle) also accompanies the A5 at times. Keep right at a fork in the path. The path leads to the Hartmann hut with a large rest area and a large stone from the Lintorf Beautification Association. The path then descends through the forest. After 250 m, the yellow circle turns right, A5 and Wittekindsweg-Nordvariante run to the left. There is another hiker's hut at the edge of the forest above Barkhausen. 75 m after the hut, the Wittekindsweg-Nord variant turns right towards Barkhausen. The A5 continues straight ahead along a field path, where after 75 m there is a bench with a stone ("Up'n Haun"). Here there is a very nice view of the north side of the Wiehengebirge as far as Bad Essen. After a little more than 200 m on the field path, A5 turns left. It follows a beautiful path along the edge of the forest. At the end of the path, turn right downhill to the "Barkhausen Fliegerquellen" hiking parking lot on the "Im Glanetal" road. Turn left at an acute angle onto the paved forest path. The path now climbs steadily uphill. After 1.2 km, there is a third hut on the side of the path, the Fliegerquellenhütte. Shortly before this, it is worth taking a short detour to the left down the steps to the Fliegerquellen. Behind the hut, the trail continues uphill. Later, the Bad Essen circular route rejoins the route of the A5 from the right. At the top at the edge of the forest, turn right along the familiar path back to the hiking parking lot.
