The museum is the only one of its kind in Germany to present the world of the former herring fishermen who shaped life in the region between Minden, Stolzenau, Stadthagen and Bückeburg on the Middle Weser
The herring fishermen lived on land in their homeland for a good five months of the year and spent the rest of the year at sea.The museum expresses this fact architecturally with two separate areas: in the main building, the professional world of the herring fishermen is shown in several departments and in the museum courtyard in the three half-timbered houses
