August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798-1874), national-liberal professor of German studies, poet of the Deutschland-Lied and numerous children's songs, worked as librarian to the Duke of Ratibor and Prince of Corvey at Corvey Castle from 1860. He found his final resting place there next to the former monastery church.
In 1903, this monument was erected to him at the New Corvey Gate. A large granite boulder was brought from the Brocken in the Harz Mountains and erected in the centre of a fountain. The second Hoffmann monument in the Corvey cemetery was donated by his son Franz in 1911.
By the way: five times a day, five minutes before 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm and 9pm, a carillon with the poet's famous children's songs rings out from the tower of the historic town hall.
