The Senne Heidschnucken sheep farm of the Paderborn/Senne District Biological Station is located in Hövelhof on the edge of the military training area.

It is home to a herd of around 400 ewes, the same number of lambs, 8 rams and 10-30 goats of the gray horned heath sheep. They graze the heathland and sandy grasslands in the Senne all year round, helping to preserve the old Westphalian heathland. Continuous browsing prevents the heather from ageing. The sheep thus keep the heathland free of emerging trees and shrubs. Heidschnuck specialties can also be purchased at the sheep farm.
