The Ovenstadt parish is one of the original parishes in the Weser region. Its roots lie in the missionary work under Emperor Charlemagne. While the first mission church was probably a wooden chapel, the current church building dates from the Romanesque period (1000 to 1200) and is first mentioned in documents in 1204. The tower was built as a defensive tower, served as a place of refuge and defense for the population and was originally not connected to the nave. The outer masonry is made of Obernkirchen sandstone.
One of the special features of this church is the late Baroque remodelling from 1772. The Baroque paintings on the galleries, the pulpit, the vault and the organ case have been completely preserved thanks to the extensive renovation in 1989/90. The undamaged Romanesque baptismal font from 1100 with Germanic fertility symbols in the base has been back in the church since 1937 after an eventful history.
