The hike takes you through an area that was once used for agriculture, but was never very productive due to the sandy soil conditions. In the first half of the 19th century, this was still predominantly heathland. However, plaggen cutting and the advent of artificial fertilization made it possible to use the land as productive farmland.
The Ems, which runs along here 1 km to the west, flooded these areas centuries ago and carried the senna sand. Spruce forests and farmland repeatedly accompany you along the route, which characterize the diversity of this landscape, among other things.
Due to the high proportion of asphalt, the trail - except for very few sections - is also recommended as a cycle tour.
