This tour takes you to the Schaumburger Land. First, you cross the Weser Bridge at the monument to the Great Elector and the adjoining "Colourful Bridge". When the Weser floods, these areas are flooded right up to the wall at the railway station fortress. It is particularly eye-catching when there is a heavy frost and the shallow water turns into a sheet of ice. If you look to the right, you have a magnificent view of the Porta Westfalica and the rolling hills of the Weser Uplands with the television tower on the Jakobsberg and the Kaiser Wilhelm monument on the Wittekindsberg.
The former railway station fortress begins behind the bridge. For security reasons, the Minden railway station was not to be built within the city walls, which is why it was given its own fortress with three forts and a flank battery. It was built in 1847 as the terminus of the "Cologne-Minden railway".
When cycling, follow the signs for the "West-East Cycle Route", which takes you through Dankersen, Berenbusch and Evesen. To get your bearings, continue to follow the aforementioned signs from Evesen until this route crosses the so-called "Castles and Mansions Cycle Route", which takes you to Bückeburg Castle.
On arrival there, cross the castle stream and enter the castle grounds through the magnificent gate. Surrounded by the historic park, this is the ancestral seat of the House of Schaumburg-Lippe. It was first mentioned in documents at the beginning of the 14th century, but the conversion to the present-day Weser Renaissance style complex did not begin until the 16th century. Immerse yourself in the history of the castle complex and the princely family, who still live there today, on a guided tour.
If you prefer something more technical and modern, head across the market square to the Helicopter Museum on Sablé Square. The history of the impressive aircraft is illustrated by five milestones and around 50 helicopters.
After a journey through aristocratic history and inspiring impressions in the helicopter museum, you may feel like taking a trip through the layers of rock in the Visitor Mine Kleinenbremen. To do this, leave Bückeburg heading south on Georgstraße and continue on Rintelner Straße until you reach Kleinenbremen. There, turn left again onto Rintelner Straße and drive past the Olympia restaurant to the mine. Iron ore has been mined in the Weserbergland region since 1835, in the well-preserved mine in Kleinenbremen from 1883 to 1957. Since 1988, the visitor mine has been inviting you to "enter" the world of mining with a hearty "Glück auf".
After a day full of varied impressions, your route takes you back to Minden along the Mühlenroute.
