Tour with historical figures through the historic center of the over 1000 year old monastery and collegiate town of Levern

Experience the chronicle of Levern in a special way. Accompany the abbey ladies and other characters in historical costumes on a lively tour through the well-preserved center of the abbey village, which is characterized by half-timbered houses.

The village of Levern and Ritter Worad's own church were mentioned in documents as early as 969 AD. From 1227 to 1558, Levern was the seat of a Cistercian convent, which was converted into a secular, noble ladies' convent during the Reformation. The numerous half-timbered convent houses and the double church, which can be seen from afar, form the historic center of Levern. The monastery church and the parish church were united in 1827. Today, the building presents itself as an irregular three-aisled hall church whose building fabric is still of Gothic origin, while the west tower is Romanesque at its core. Here you will be greeted by the nuns, who still have a certain "arrogance" about them, and introduced to the chronicles of Levern. Worth seeing are the late Gothic wall paintings, the carved baptismal font with raised lid from 1684 and the organ prospectus from 1682.

Continue through the "Penitent's Door" to the Abbey Curia Houses. The baroque collegiate curiae built by the local nobility represent a uniform building type. They all rise as half-timbered buildings above massive plinth storeys, turn their representative eaves towards the street and are covered by hipped roofs. Each abbey curia bears the coat of arms of its builder, usually above the entrance. Along the way, you will meet "contemporary witnesses" in historical costumes, who tell amusing stories from ten centuries ago. This includes the famous cook and first female cookbook author in Germany, Henriette Davidis. She is said to have coined the famous words for all those who love baking, cooking and eating "Take....". She lived in Levern around 1848 in the so-called "Pfarrwitwenhaus". Just opposite was the inn "Zur grünen Linde" on the former stagecoach route. Here, Henriette Davidis entertained travelers who stopped off in Levern on their way to Bremen and had a good opportunity to try out her recipes. The tour ends at the "Alter Spritzenhaus", where there is a "spiritual drink" at the end.
