Start your circular walk at the Gütersloh district hall. After crossing Herzebrocker Straße (pedestrian traffic lights), take Teckentrups Weg, where you will reach the countryside after a few minutes. After crossing a small wooded area, you reach the Dalke. The course of this 24 km long, right-hand tributary of the Ems was restored in the 1990s and 2000s. As a result, a diverse habitat for flora and fauna has developed again, which today serves as a local recreation area.

After a short section along Herzebrocker Straße, you turn left into Rhedaer Forst. This approximately 1,000-hectare forest is owned by the Bentheim-Tecklenburg royal family and borders the town of Rheda-Wiedenbrück. On your way, you will pass the listed Kalthof farm dating back to 1708.

On the western edge of Rheaer Forst is the Wapelbad, which used to be a light and air bath and is now a local recreation area with a range of restaurants and cultural and sporting events.

From here, it is not far to today's LWL Clinic. Numerous buildings of the nursing home built in 1911 as well as the park and garden are listed buildings. In 2014, a memorial to the euthanasia victims of the former Westphalian Provincial Sanatorium Gütersloh was inaugurated to commemorate the  murdered patients during the National Socialist era. This place of remembrance and commemoration consists of the Room of Names (Church of the Cross), the tour of the clinic's history (cemetery) and the Stone of Remembrance.

After your tour of the LWL clinic grounds, you will be back at Gütersloh District Hall in just a few minutes.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

Stop off at the Gütersloh Wapelbad. Here you can sit outside in fine weather and enjoy a delicious Wapelstern. On sunny weekends, freshly grilled sausages are served with a variety of salads. The former swimming pool has plenty to offer children: there are two beach volleyball courts, a children's playground and the water hose at the swimming area is refreshing in warm temperatures and provides plenty of fun. The large lawn invites you to sunbathe or play ball games.
