Exploring the Salzuflen area to Herford in hiking boots

We hike through the varied landscape garden on the historical tracks of the former Salzuflen narrow-gauge railroad. Past the idyllic salt marshes, bird aviaries and bee information stands to the forest restaurant "Zur Loose". If you feel like playing a round of minigolf along the way, you can take a refreshment break and enjoy the minigolf course under shady trees.

Walkers make memories for life

On the soft forest floor, we turn left into the enchanted Finnebach valley with deciduous trees and the Finnebach stream.
At Golfplatz Heerhof, the hiking trail meanders gently up a hill between the golf course and the dense mixed forest.

Germany's oldest highway bridge

On the way, we pass under the Finnebach Valley Bridge, a viaduct well worth seeing. It's worth a photo stop there. Built from red Eifel sandstone, the highway bridge is one of the oldest in Germany. Built in 1938 and 1939, it was opened to traffic in the same year. In 1996, the bridge was extended and concrete slabs were laid to widen it to 38 meters. The viaduct is an architectural masterpiece and has been a listed building since 1988.

After the first gentle climb, fantastic views across the plain to Herford are the reward.

In an arc around the Stuckenberg, the hiking trail takes us to Vlothoer Straße. There you will find the Hotel Waldesrand. Along the way, you will discover colorful signposts for the Stuckenpfad, a project by a Herford elementary school.

Originally, the start and finish of the hiking trail was at the Waldesrand restaurant and hotel. As the circular tour leads through the picturesque town center of Bad Salzuflen and past the Gradierwerke, you can also start the hiking tour there if you wish. In addition, the diverse culinary offerings in the spa town of Bad Salzuflen provide a favorite place for every gourmet.

Detour to the Bismarck Tower in Herford

For a detour of around 900 m to the historic Bismarck Tower in Herford, we walk along the left-hand side of the hotel and follow the signposted hiking trail. It leads directly to the Bismarck Tower. Next to it, the memorial stone commemorates the "Day of German Unity" on October 3, 1990 and on the left, we look out over the densely wooded region. A shelter and picnic areas invite you to take a relaxing break, especially at sunset.

If you don't want to take the hiking trail back to the Hotel Waldesrand, there is a hiking option to the west that leads directly to the magnificent viewing terrace at the Steinmeyer restaurant.

Alternatively, we walk back along the trail and follow the signs to Herford. We then change direction to the Steinmeyer restaurant. The Hansaweg X9 or hiking trail 2 also leads to the restaurant.

Enjoy fantastic views with fine food

The predestined location of the Steinmeyer restaurant offers outstanding views and is a wonderful place to stop for refreshments on this tour. This is certainly an unforgettable moment for every hiker!

The mostly shady panoramic trail leads back to Bad Salzuflen with wonderful views. We pass the Herford zoo on the right and walk back under a highway bridge to the first residential buildings in Bad Salzuflen.

On arrival at the Obernberg parking lot, we descend to the VitaSol Therme and discover new perspectives on the rest of the route through the lovingly designed landscaped garden, which is well worth seeing. Once we reach our destination, we enjoy the fine brine air at the adventure graduation tower and settle down in one of the surrounding restaurants for a cozy break.
