Burgbergweg
Count Volkwin von Schwalenberg moved his seat to the mountain spur above Schwalenberg in the first half of the 13th century. Old copperplate engravings from the 17th century show a closed hilltop castle on the unwooded mountain. The castle originally consisted of a keep, two stone residential towers or houses, a gate building, the brewery and - to protect against raids - a moat and wall. There was also an outer bailey and several gardens in front of the castle. Over the centuries, the castle served as a widow's seat and paragium (hereditary endowment for the children of the lord). Years of disputes between the owners of the velvet lordship led to the castle falling into disrepair. Some of the buildings were used as a "source of building materials" and demolished. Today's castle dates mainly from 1627/28. Between 1911 and 1913, part of the south wing and the stair tower were renovated in neo-Renaissance style.
On nice days, the "Grafenblick" and the "Malereiche" viewpoint below the castle offer a wonderful view over Schwalenberg to the mountain ranges of the Teutoburg Forest and the Eggegebirge mountains.

Directions
From the parking lot at the "Am Oekerberg" bus stop, you first walk a few meters through Schwalenberg's old town until you reach the market square. The Volkwinbrunnen fountain is your starting point. It goes uphill and you can already see the castle from below. After the first few steps, you reach the path on which the A2 hiking trail continues. However, you continue walking towards the castle. Always uphill. After a few 100 meters you reach a junction. Here you can take a detour to the Grafenblick viewpoint. It's worth it!
Once you are back on the main path, continue walking along the steep slopes and, looking back, you will have a wonderful view over the rooftops of SChwalenberg.
At the end of the path, you will reach the parking lot that belongs to the castle. Below this parking lot, you will come to the small forest path that leads you along the castle hill back down to the village.
