The "St. Cäcilien-Chor Westenholz" and the "Chorgemeinschaft St. Jakobus" Mastholte, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, invite you to an extraordinary musical event.
On May 4 in the Cultura Rietberg and on May 11 in the Stadthalle Delbrück, both at 6 p.m., they will perform the great musical "KINDER VON EDEN" by Stephen Schwartz. They will also be supported in this major project by experienced members of the well-known Rietberg Youth Musical Stage.
The diversity of this piece is demonstrated by the cast alone, which is made up of the children and young people, the soloists and the adult choirs.

With the performance of this musical by world-class composer Stephen Schwartz, the choral community is taking an interesting, courageous path and a musical challenge that is a stark contrast to the traditional everyday path of a church choir.
After the premiere in 1997, the Times wrote: "Of all the musicals inspired by the Bible and influenced by rock music, this is the best!"

About the piece:

The musical "CHILDREN OF EDEN" is inspired by two "classics" of the Old Testament. On the one hand, there is the creation story from the Book of Genesis, the expulsion from paradise, the murder of Abel. And then there is Noah and his family, the ark and the Flood. From a contemporary perspective, the interpretation also shows universal themes such as creation and family and the associated challenges.

The conflict between "Father" God and his "children" runs like a red thread through the story. The ending shows that children not only go their own way and find their own answers, but that they are also able to open their parents' eyes in some respects. In "Children of Eden", the biblical story is staged in an original and imaginative way under the aspect of "family conflicts".

The atmospheric music and emotional lyrics invite you to reflect on the deep relationships between parents and their children. The gripping melodies are not only catchy tunes, they also touch the hearts of the audience and promote a feeling of connection.

About the interpretation:

"CHILDREN OF EDEN" is a deeply human work and touches religious and non-religious audiences alike. The melodic and lively score combines a variety of popular styles such as pop, folk, rock, reggae and gospel with great Broadway ballads."

The large choral community takes on the role of narrator in the background, playing a significant part in the performance with the extensive settings of the texts with unfamiliar rhythms and harmonies.

The soloists take on the scenic performance: Janina Meiners (Eve / Noah's wife), Silas Bretsch (Adam / Noah), Timo Schlüter (God the Father) and other members of the Youth Musical Stage.

Another highlight of the performance is the dance performance of the biblical scenes. The fact that dance is used as an essential element in the shows is striking and well-known; less attention is paid to dance in the Bible, although it is mentioned in over 20 places. Praying, praising and proclaiming God with physical expression and dance is biblical.

Since dance is a form of language, it can also be perceived and interpreted as a sign, sometimes as a cultic ritual, sometimes as praise or as an expression of feelings and ultimately as the "picture language" of biblical events.

Members of the Youth Musical Stage will take on this challenging task under the choreography of Kirsteen Mair, who completed her training at the famous Laine Theatre Arts in London and teaches at the University of Music, among other places, and will present scenes and statements from the Bible in dance for the first time.
