With the help of an extensive network of supporters and the financial backing of his family, he successfully evades international prosecution for years. The film traces Mengele's escape routes - from Argentina via Paraguay to Brazil, where he finally lived in São Paulo under a false identity. Increasingly marked by illness, old age and isolation, his life becomes ever more constricted. When his now grown-up son Rolf finally tracks him down, father and son have a wordless, oppressive encounter - a moment of confrontation with a past that cannot be shaken off.
