Along the way, numerous information signs provide details about the forest’s plants and animals, as well as the geological features of the landscape. These include the spring-fed alluvial cones, which are formed by underground water movements in the karst. During periods of heavy rainfall, small lakes can even form in some of their funnels. Also along the way are the school forest, featuring various tree species and a “green classroom,” the Niederntudorf quarry, and the Quickspringe springs along the Alme River. In summer, the Alme’s riverbed can dry up in places because the water seeps into the karstified subsoil and continues to flow underground. You can find detailed directions for the forest nature trail, including a map, below under “Related Tours.”"

Where does a stream simply disappear into the ground? And how do those unusual sinkholes form in the landscape? On the ecological forest nature trail in Salzkotten-Niederntudorf, you can discover these and other unique features of the Paderborn Plateau.

The approximately 8.2-kilometer-long loop trail leads from the town center into the Niederntudorfer Forest and on into the Almetal Valley.
