The Poelmahn residential and commercial building at 134 Lange Straße tells the story of Vlotho's heyday as an important trading city on the Weser River.

Around 1818, the merchant Georg Otto Brandt had the two-story building constructed. While the exterior followed the traditional half-timbered style, the house featured a floor plan that was modern for its time. Together with his brother, Brandt ran one of Vlotho’s largest trading firms.

At that time, Vlotho owed its importance primarily to its port on the Weser River. Regional goods were exported through it, and goods were imported via the seaport of Bremen into the region. The firm Brandt & Söhne played an important role in this. With the opening of the railroad in 1875, trade via the port of Vlotho lost its significance. Shortly thereafter, the firm Brandt & Söhne was also forced to file for bankruptcy.

The house later passed to Philipp Heinrich Poelmahn, whose descendants lived there until 1962. His son, Georg Heinrich Poelmahn, returned to the house in 1870 and established a box factory there that produced packaging for Vlotho’s growing cigar industry.

Today, parts of the ground floor are used as apartments. The majority of the building is open to the public. Guided tours and chamber music concerts are offered on specific dates. Additionally, 19th-century landscape paintings are on display.
