Naturschutzgebiet „Hügelgräberfeld Mantinghausen“
=================================================

- Nature reserve/natural monument

Boker Seenplatte \| Delbrück

Amid the forest, sandy soils, and the former dunes of the Lippe floodplain lie traces of a history dating back more than 3,000 years. East of Mantinghausen, the “Mantinghausen Burial Mounds” nature reserve stretches along the Old Roman Road.

The flat mounds in the area are part of a prehistoric burial ground. Archaeological investigations have identified 16 urn graves. The burials date from various periods—from the Neolithic through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. The variety of burial types indicates that the site was in use for approximately 1,000 years. Some of the burial mounds are still visible in the landscape today.

Today, the burial ground is situated in a landscape of English oak-birch forest, heathland, and nutrient-poor sandy grasslands. The area has been protected since 1970. At that time, the aim was also to prevent the historic burial mounds from falling victim to sand mining.
