Vlotho had more than twenty water-powered mills on the Linnenbeeke and Forellenbach rivers. Additional historic watermill sites are also known to have existed along the tributaries.

The Klostermühle, first mentioned in 1258, is considered the oldest known mill site in Vlotho, located in the immediate vicinity of the Weser River. Thanks to the unique topography (a height difference of over 200 meters between the Krummen Mühle at Bonstapel and the Klostermühle on the Weser), it was possible to build the numerous water-powered mills in the first place.
