The watermill, most of whose buildings now stand on the Melle side, has always been owned by the Martmüller family. It was first mentioned around 1100 and the current bridge over the Warmenau was built in 1855.

During the general decline of mills, a mill tradition of over 1,200 years also came to an end at the Martmühle in 1969.
