Perched on the highest point of the town of Lichtenau stands the medieval castle, which is closely linked to the town's origins and history.

The fortified complex was built in the early 14th century by the Diocese of Paderborn and initially served to protect the bishop’s territory.

Later, the castle served as the official residence of the Prince-Bishop of Paderborn and the administrative center of the Lichtenau district. Of the once-larger complex, the striking, four-story residential tower is the main structure that remains today. Its interior houses, among other things, a castle cellar with a barrel vault and a knights’ hall.
