Kütfelsen und Unitasquelle \| Salzkotten

In the heart of downtown Salzkotten, directly behind City Hall, lies the Kütfelsen with the historic wellhouse of the Unitas Spring. This sinter mound, over three meters high, formed over many millennia through the deposition of brine. The oldest layers are estimated to be more than 15,000 years old.

The Unitas Spring is the oldest spring in Salzkotten. Its brine was once used for salt production and channeled through wooden—and later lead—pipes to the salt works. Above the spring stands the fountain house, built in 1554, which is now a designated historic landmark. Above the entrance, you can see the old salt workers’ coat of arms and the motto “Unita durant.”

Rare halophytes such as sea aster, saltmarsh aster, salt rush, and salt trident have also been reintroduced on the Kütfelsen. The Kütfelsen and the well house are open to the public and are located right in the historic city center.
