description: "When the Amelunxen family embraced Luther’s teachings at the very beginning of the Reformation, a centuries-long dispute between Catholics and Protestants began in Amelunxen. Ownership of St. George’s Church, built in 1118, changed hands frequently between the two denominations until 1651, when the church was finally awarded to the Protestants. In 1674, the church became a simultaneous church, used by both denominations. Between 1818 and 1822, the last Prince-Bishop of Corvey, Ferdinand von Lüninck, built a simple hall church for the Catholics, featuring a choir enclosed on three sides, a mirror vault, and an incorporated north tower. Of particular interest is the Baroque high altar with the altarpiece “The Raising of the Cross.” Both the altar and the communion rail originate from the church of the Minorite monastery in Höxter, which was dissolved in 1804. The coat of arms above the altar is also found above the church’s portal. It refers to Ferdinand von Lüninck. For a long time, the church was popularly known as the “Church of Atonement,” because Bishop von Lüninck is said to have built it almost entirely with his own funds after agreeing to the sale of the Minorite monastery in Höxter. The choir organ came from the famous Corvey Abbey Church; today, only its façade remains, which was restored earlier this year."

When the Amelunxen family embraced Luther’s teachings at the very beginning of the Reformation, a centuries-long dispute between Catholics and Protestants began in Amelunxen.

The choir organ came from the famous Corvey Abbey Church; today, only its façade remains, which was restored earlier this year.
