Small and lively, it emerges from the ground from several sources to quickly become a small stream. After 371 km, it flows into the North Sea as a wide river. The Ems, called Amisia by the ancient Romans: an (un)known beauty.

The Ems has its source on the edge of the "Moosheide" nature reserve. The uppermost spring in the Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock district of Stukenbrock-Senne is a seepage spring that pours all year round.

Many small watercourses feed the stream, so that seepage springs can be found not only in the urban area of Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock, but also in the neighboring municipality of Hövelhof.

In addition to the visitor footbridge, which is accessible via wooden steps and offers plenty of space, there is a barrier-free visitor footbridge above the spring, which can also be easily reached by bike, baby carriage or wheelchair.

The Ems spring water is said to bring good luck!

The Ems springs in the Moosheide nature reserve are not only excellent hiking terrain, for example with the 5 km long circular Ems adventure trail. The Emsquelle is also the starting point of the well-known Ems Cycle Path, which leads through the beautiful landscape to the North Sea without any climbs.

By the way: There are 17 official selfie points in the SHS city area as well as a mobile selfie point for city events. Sights, excursion destinations such as the 400-year-old hunting lodge, the Ems Adventure World, the Ems spring or the Wapelaue provide the backdrop for personal memories: Pose, smile, frotograph and share!

Directions & Parking facilities

The Bielefeld - Paderborn train line takes you directly to Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock. The nearest bus stop is Stukenbrock Polizeischule, where bus lines 82, 84.1 and H3 stop. OWL-Verkehr https://teutoowl.de/owlv/ will show you how to get here by public transport and, of course, how to get from A to B on site.
The best way to reach the Emsquellen by car is via the A33 highway, taking the Stukenbrock-Senne exit. From the freeway, turn left onto Paderborner Straße and after about one kilometer turn onto Steinweg, after 1.4 km turn left onto Emser Kirchweg and follow this for about 500 m and then turn right to the Emsquelle parking lot, from there a footpath leads to the Emsquellen.
The SHS 31 cycle path and the Ems-Erlebnis hiking trail lead along the Ems springs.
