In the Düstertal valley near Bleiwäsche, fascinating geological history meets active quarrying. The limestone quarry operated by Mitteldeutsche Hartstein-Industrie (MHI) offers impressive insights into the geology of the northern Sauerland. In addition to rare minerals such as malachite, azurite, galena, and pyrite, fossils and the remains of cave bears and prehistoric bears have also been discovered here.

The “Kippeblick” lookout point offers a great view of the imposing quarry and the surrounding landscape. Information panels tell the story of Bleiwäsche’s mining history and its geological features. With a little luck, you can even watch the quarrying in progress from here.
