Schloss mit rotem Dach, umgeben von grünen Bäumen und einem blühenden Busch im Vordergrund.

East of Salzkotten, south of the B1, stands Dreckburg Castle. This striking tower castle was built around 1350 by Cathedral Provost Otto von Bentheim and initially served as the residence of ecclesiastical lords. It was first mentioned in a document in 1386. Over the centuries, Dreckburg changed hands several times and was used, among other things, for agricultural purposes. In the 18th century, the complex was expanded to include its two Baroque side wings.

Today, Dreckburg is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The historic complex is surrounded by a moat. On the third floor of the tower, remnants of a Renaissance mural depicting the “Fountain of Youth” have been preserved.

Once a year, the grounds are opened for the Dreckburg Open Air. Concerts are then held right next to the historic castle.
