... it is no problem to travel on the Weser. The experienced skipper can also go upriver on the Weser via Höxter and Beverungen to Bad Karlshafen and Hannoversch Münden during certain seasons. It is advisable to travel on the Weser accompanied by local guides.
The waterways: Mittelland Canal & Weser
In Hörstel, from the direction of the Ems Estuary or from the Rhine via the Dortmund-Ems Canal you can reach the Mittelland Canal, and thus the Teutoburg Forest holiday region. Via Bad Essen, Preußisch Oldendorf and Lübbecke you can continue towards Minden. North of the city centre, the canal runs about 20 m above the Weser on two adjacent canal bridges. The older canal bridge was built from 1911-1914 and is 375 m long.
The trough 24m wide and 3m deep. The new, northern bridge was built from 1993 to 1998 and is 398 meters long, the trough is 42m wide and 4m deep. The old canal bridge can only be used by recreational craft and passenger ships in West-East direction. The Minden moorings are very quietly located, because the passing shipping moves very slowly. The old town and the information centre of the Water Guard are easily accessible from here. The Weser can be reached via two locks.
